Local campaigners in Newport are demanding urgent action against fly tipping as warning signs appear across the city, highlighting a growing problem.
Fly tipping has been a growing issue in neighborhoods like St Julian’s, Beechwood, and Maindee. Recently, bright yellow warning stickers have popped up on bins, urging folks to use their wheelie bins properly.
These stickers are no joke. They warn that dumping waste near bins can lead to a hefty £400 fine. Local campaigner Michael Enea has noticed the problem getting worse over the past year.
Even with changes to bin collection schedules, it’s unclear why fly tipping is on the rise. Enea pointed out on Facebook that the need for warning signs shows there’s a serious issue.
He’s seen areas where these signs don’t seem to make a difference, especially in Beechwood and Maindee. Some streets, like Constable Drive and Durham Road, are particularly bad.
He’s not alone in this fight. Other local councillors have also voiced their concerns, with over 1,500 reports of fly tipping made to the council since August.
Newport Council has labeled fly tipping as a “blight” and is committed to a zero-tolerance approach. They’re working with residents to help them dispose of waste correctly and improve recycling rates.
Residents are encouraged to report any fly tipping incidents through the council’s website or by calling their hotline. It’s time to clean up Newport!
