Newport: Locals are buzzing about the city’s plan to change speed limits. Some roads might go back to 30mph, and opinions are all over the place.

Recently, Newport City Council suggested bumping up the speed limit on 16 roads. This comes after the controversial 20mph limit was set across many areas in Wales.

Some folks are frustrated, saying the slower speeds make it tough to get around. Others think it’s a great move for safety.

Susan Graham, a resident from Bettws, expressed her concerns, saying, “It’s a joke. People treat the roads like a race track.” She worries that the current limits don’t seem to matter to speeders.

She added that if it were up to her, she’d hand out fines and take licenses away from reckless drivers.

On the flip side, Jamie Sefton thinks the 20mph limit is hard on cars. He mentioned that his mum drives in low gears just to stay under the limit. Still, he supports the idea of raising some limits back to 30mph if it helps save lives.

Elizabeth Vaughan, who doesn’t drive but often rides with her mum, believes some roads should stay at 20mph. She recalled a close call on Royal Oak Hill, where a fast driver nearly caused an accident.

Ali Qayoumi prefers the 20mph limit, feeling it’s safer. He pointed out that Bettws Lane, which is on the list to change back to 30mph, is near a school and should remain at 20mph.

Harvey Dryer, who takes the train to work, also supports the 20mph limit, saying it makes things safer for everyone.

The proposed changes come after a public consultation that got over 3,500 responses, with residents suggesting 335 roads for consideration.
