Sefton Council has greenlit new zebra crossings in Merseyside to enhance pedestrian safety amid local concerns
Formby: Sefton Council has been looking into adding two new zebra crossings to help keep pedestrians safe. They discussed this at a recent meeting, and it seems like a good move.
One crossing will be on Liverpool Road in Birkdale, making it easier for folks to get between the Aldi and Tesco Express. It’s about 40 meters from the Tesco entrance, so it should help with the busy foot traffic.
However, not everyone is on board. After a public consultation, four people raised concerns. They worried about needing another crossing, losing parking spots, and safety issues at the entrance where cars park.
The council took these worries seriously and explained how they plan to tackle them. They’ll use zig-zag markings to keep the area clear of parked cars, which should help with visibility.
The second crossing is planned for Chapel Lane, also in Formby. This one came about after a local resident, who has a visual impairment, asked for help crossing the road safely. Right now, there are no crossing points at that junction.
To make things even better, Merseytravel is on board to move a nearby bus stop, and they might need to shift some bins and small trees too. One councillor, Carla Thomas, raised a good point about disabled parking bays being affected by the new bus stop location.
She asked how many of those bays would be moved since they’re crucial for people with disabilities. The committee agreed to look into this and make any necessary changes.
