Severe weather warnings have led to the cancellation of several New Year’s Eve events across the UK, impacting celebrations in major cities.
London: So, it looks like New Year’s Eve is going to be a bit of a washout this year. A bunch of events have been called off because of some pretty nasty weather warnings. The UK is bracing for high winds and heavy rain as we head into 2025.
In Edinburgh, they’ve had to cancel outdoor events for the first time in years. The street party and the big concert in Princes Street Gardens are off, which is a real bummer. They were supposed to have Scottish band Texas performing, and now that’s all scrapped.
Blackpool isn’t having much luck either. Their fireworks show is cancelled due to the forecast, but they’re still going ahead with a music projection show. At least there’s something for families to enjoy by the sea.
It’s not just Edinburgh and Blackpool, though. The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings across the country. They’re expecting stormy conditions to hit on New Year’s Eve, with yellow warnings for wind and rain in various parts of England, Northern Ireland, and Wales.
Wales is under a 24-hour rain warning starting at 6 PM on New Year’s Eve. They’re predicting some serious rainfall, with totals possibly reaching over 100 mm in certain areas. That’s a lot of rain!
Edinburgh’s spokesperson mentioned that they had to make the tough call to cancel everything outdoors for safety reasons. They’re still going ahead with indoor events, so it’s not a total loss.
As for London, they’re keeping an eye on the weather but haven’t cancelled anything yet. However, transport delays are expected due to the strong winds, which could reach up to 70 mph.
So, if you’re planning to head out for New Year’s, make sure to check the weather and stay safe. It’s going to be a wild start to the new year!
