Charfield: So, there’s been a bit of a hiccup with the new train station in Charfield. It was supposed to open last year, but now we’re looking at 2027. Can you believe it? This station is part of the Bristol to Gloucester line and has been in the works for ages.

It’s been a long wait for the folks in Charfield. The last station closed down ages ago, thanks to those Beeching cuts. People have been chatting about getting a new station for over thirty years, and finally, in 2023, they got the green light.

The new station is going to be pretty cool. It’s set to be built right by Station Road and will cost around £22 million. There will be two platforms, a footbridge, bus stops, bike parking, and car parking too. Sounds like a proper upgrade!

But here’s the kicker: construction hasn’t even started yet. They were hoping to have it ready by the end of 2024, but that’s been pushed back. The council and Network Rail submitted a plan to make sure everything goes smoothly, and they’re aiming for a spring 2027 opening.

They got the thumbs up for that plan in September 2024, but there are still a few boxes to tick before they can break ground. Some conditions are still hanging around, which could affect when they can actually start building.

When it’s finally up and running, the station will really help out. The design folks pointed out that Charfield and nearby areas don’t have many public transport options. Most people rely on cars to get to work, which isn’t great.

With the new station, locals will have a better way to get to places like Bristol and Gloucester. It’ll be a game changer for commuting and will make it easier for people to access jobs and schools.

Once it’s built, there will be hourly trains to Bristol Parkway, Bristol Temple Meads, and Gloucester. The whole construction process is expected to take about a year to a year and a half.

This station is also part of the MetroWest project, which is all about improving transport links in the area. They’re working on reopening the Portishead line and adding more stations, which is exciting news for everyone.

According to the council, they’re planning to start some prep work this month, with actual construction kicking off in 2025. Fingers crossed, we’ll finally see that station open in 2027!
