Tiverton: A new tidal lagoon on the Somerset coast could be a game changer. It might produce clean energy for twice as long as Hinkley Point C. Local MP Rachel Gilmour shared this exciting news recently.

The tidal lagoon would stretch from Minehead to Watchet. If built, it could be operational by 2038. This project promises new jobs and financial boosts for the area.

During a recent Q&A event, Gilmour highlighted the lagoon’s benefits. She’s been collaborating with engineer Chris Binnie since early 2024. They plan to meet with ministers soon to discuss the project further.

Gilmour explained that the lagoon would start near Minehead. The Luttrell Estate has agreed to provide land for the project. They’re also buying 35 acres for battery storage, ensuring they won’t rely solely on the National Grid.

The tidal lagoon could take ten years to build and cost around £10 billion. Gilmour noted that Hinkley Point C has cost £30 billion and isn’t operational yet. This lagoon could provide two-thirds of Hinkley’s electricity for 120 years.

She also mentioned that the project would create local jobs during construction. Plus, they’re negotiating to offer cheaper electricity rates for residents.

The lagoon would feature over 200 concrete structures in a semicircle. Up to 125 turbines would harness tidal movements to generate electricity. The power would be stored at Doniford or sent directly to the National Grid.

In addition to energy, the project promises a new promenade, arts center, visitor center, and ferry terminal in Minehead. This is crucial for the local economy, especially for tourism.

Gilmour believes the lagoon will attract more investment and create high-paying jobs. The construction could also fund local infrastructure projects.

She excitedly shared plans for a 300-boat marina in Minehead. This would boost tourism and local spending. Instead of low-wage jobs, residents could train for better opportunities.

There are also plans for a watersports facility and environmental initiatives to support local wildlife. Gilmour is keen on using community infrastructure funds for local improvements.

She mentioned a previous proposal for a tidal lagoon from Watchet to Blue Anchor. While this new project won’t include road redirection, there will be walkways around the lagoon.

Gilmour hopes for a public consultation next year. She acknowledges some resistance to change but believes this project is vital for the area.

Other MPs have shown support for the tidal lagoon idea. They discussed its potential during a recent parliamentary debate, highlighting Somerset’s role in renewable energy.
