A new park in South West London will include a mini forest, play areas, and paths for the community to enjoy
Hampton: A new park is on the way in South West London! The Richmond Council has given the green light for Oldfield Road Meadow, which has been sitting unused for over a decade.
This 0.6-hectare space will get a makeover with new paths and play equipment. Plus, they’re planning to plant a Miyawaki microforest, which means trees will be packed in tight to help them grow faster.
They’ll also add new access points for both pedestrians and vehicles, making it easier for everyone to visit. But don’t worry, a part of the park will be left untouched to protect the local wildlife.
Located behind St Mary’s Hampton CE Primary School, this site was originally bought for educational purposes. However, since it hasn’t been used in years, the school doesn’t need it anymore.
The Environment Committee of the council voted unanimously on January 7 to turn this area into a public park. This means it’ll become a new nature conservation spot for everyone to enjoy.
A council report mentioned that while the park isn’t open yet, some folks have been sneaking in through a hole in the fence. By officially opening it up, they hope to encourage positive use of the space and reduce crime and antisocial behavior.
They’re also aiming to make the borough greener and safer, which is part of their bigger plan. The parks team is now working on getting the necessary permissions to add vehicle access to the park.
