A new singing initiative in Newport aims to support those with Parkinson’s and their carers through community singing sessions
Newport: There’s an exciting new project kicking off in Newport for folks with Parkinson’s and their carers. It’s called ParkinSings, and it’s all about bringing people together through singing.
This initiative is a partnership between Parkinson’s UK Cymru and Choirs For Good. They’re hoping to create a fun space where everyone can enjoy the perks of singing together.
Not only is it about having a good time, but they’re also looking into how singing might help with voice control, breathing, and even boost mental health. Sounds pretty cool, right?
The singing sessions will happen every two weeks for three months at Stow Park Community Centre on Brynhyfryd Road. Mark your calendars for Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm!
Thanks to funding from the Arts Council of Wales’ Health and Wellbeing Lottery Fund, this project is all set to go. Rebecca Lydon from Parkinson’s UK Cymru shared that getting involved in local activities can really uplift people’s spirits.
She encourages everyone to join in and see how singing can help manage the challenges of Parkinson’s while making new friends and having a blast.
Ruth Haugen from Choirs For Good is equally excited about this project. She mentioned that there’s growing evidence showing how singing in a choir can positively impact physical and mental health.
The ParkinSings sessions are scheduled for January 22, February 5, February 19, March 5, and March 19. If you want to know more, reach out to Rebecca Lydon at rlydon@parkinsons.org.uk or give her a call at 0344 225 3714.
