A corporate sign may soon adorn a historic building in Tunbridge Wells, pending council approval
Tunbridge Wells: There’s a buzz about a new sign that might go up on a stunning old building in town. The Cotswold Company wants to put their sign on the front of this iconic structure, which used to be a church. But the council still needs to give the green light.
This building is pretty special. It has these six big Tuscan pillars and five archways, making it stand out on Mount Pleasant Road. It’s a real eye-catcher as you stroll through the town.
Originally built in 1848, the church was made from local stone. It got a fancy front added later on, and many folks still remember it as “Habitat” from when it was a store. It had three floors of shopping space before closing in 2007.
People love to hang out on the steps in front of the building, especially in summer. It’s a great spot to chill or meet up with friends.
The company behind the sign application, 360 Signs Ltd, says it will be non-illuminated and won’t harm the building’s historic look. They believe it won’t affect nearby listed buildings either.
They’re aiming for a design that respects the building’s architecture, hoping it will help people appreciate the historic site even more.
However, the council’s conservation team isn’t too keen on the idea. They think the sign might clash with the building’s simple, classic style. They argue that the current banners are more eye-catching than the proposed lettering.
If you’re curious about the application, you can check it out on the Tunbridge Wells Borough Council’s planning portal. Just search for the reference number 24/03188/LBC to find all the details.
