Pembrokeshire: The annual Long Course Weekend triathlon might be changing its cycling route. This comes after locals raised concerns about the current path, which takes cyclists through busy areas like Wisemans Bridge and Saundersfoot.

This event is known as ‘Europe’s largest multi-sport festival’ and includes swimming, biking, and running. Athletes push themselves to complete all three disciplines for that shiny Long Course Weekend medal.

Since 2010, these triathlons have been a summer staple in Pembrokeshire. But folks are worried about how road closures affect local businesses and traffic, especially during the cycling events. The current route stretches 112 miles and includes popular spots like Tenby and Pembroke.

Back in December, the Pembrokeshire County Council heard complaints from residents who felt overwhelmed by the disruptions. Some communities were described as being “at breaking point” due to the closures.

Local councillors, Chris Williams and Alec Cormack, even suggested that the council should reconsider its support for the event. They pointed out that many residents and businesses feel cut off during the race weekends.

After their concerns were raised, the Long Course organizers proposed a new circular route. The council decided to hold off on any decisions until they could discuss these new ideas in a special meeting.

The proposed route would take cyclists from Tenby to Pembroke, looping around Freshwater West and then heading to Neyland. It would avoid the contentious areas, which should ease some local tensions.

Activity Wales, the event organizers, mentioned that they’re looking to switch to an open-road format by 2025. This change aims to reduce the hassle of full road closures and lessen the impact on local traffic.

They believe this new route will not only address community concerns but also showcase more of Pembrokeshire’s beautiful landscapes, potentially boosting tourism in the area.
