Leicester City Council is considering new rules to tackle anti-social behavior, including cycling and street drinking, in the city center
Leicester: There’s a buzz around town as the city council is thinking about a new order to tackle some annoying behaviors in the city center. They’re hearing a lot of public concern lately, and it seems like they want to do something about it.
Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby is on it, saying he’ll use every tool he has to fix these issues. They’re looking to address things like street drinking, begging, loud music, and the reckless use of bikes and e-scooters.
He gets where the public is coming from and is proposing a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to help clean things up. If this gets the green light, it’ll give the police and council more power to act quickly against anyone causing trouble.
The idea is to make the streets more enjoyable for everyone. They want to crack down on those who ride bikes or e-scooters in a way that bothers pedestrians, but they’re still welcoming considerate cyclists.
Sir Peter mentioned that loud music and fast cyclists can really ruin the vibe in the city. He believes it’s not fair for a few people to spoil things for everyone else. He’s all in for making the city center better and might even expand these rules to other areas if it works out.
Breaking this order could lead to a fine, starting at £100 and going up to £1,000 if it gets serious. The proposed order would cover a good chunk of the city, and they’re asking residents for their thoughts on it.
There’s a consultation happening on the Leicester City Council website until February 17. If it passes, the new rules could kick in on April 1 and last for three years. Sounds like a big change is on the way!
