The Met Office warns of severe cold with temperatures dropping to -16C, impacting travel and health across the UK this week
Devon: So, the weather’s really taking a turn, huh? The Met Office just dropped a warning about temperatures possibly hitting a bone-chilling -16C. That’s seriously cold!
They’ve got yellow warnings out for snow, ice, and fog across the UK. Just yesterday, snow and sleet caused a bit of chaos, especially in Devon and Cornwall. Roads were closed, and folks were stuck in traffic for ages.
Can you believe it? Snow ploughs got stuck too! It’s wild out there. They’re working hard to clear the roads, but with temperatures dropping overnight, it’s going to be a rough ride.
Scotland and northern England might see lows of -14C, and it could even get colder. The Met Office is saying we might hit -16C by Thursday night. That’s no joke!
Travel’s going to be tricky, especially with icy spots. They’ve got warnings for snow and ice in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it’s not looking great for Cornwall and Wales either.
Drivers are being told to stick to major roads that are more likely to be gritted. The RAC is seeing a huge spike in rescue calls, the most since last December. It’s a bit of a mess!
They’re warning about black ice too, which can sneak up on you. It’s best to be cautious out there. The Met Office says it’s going to be “bitterly cold” tonight, especially in rural areas.
Last year, we hit -14C in Dalwhinnie, but if we reach -16C, it’ll be the coldest January in 15 years. That’s pretty intense!
On top of that, the UK Health Security Agency has extended its cold weather alert until Sunday. They’re worried about vulnerable folks, especially the elderly, who could face serious health risks.
And just when you think it can’t get worse, there’s been flooding too! Firefighters had to rescue people in Leicestershire. It’s a tough time for many, but let’s keep an eye on each other.
