Greater Manchester announces major planning developments, including student housing and regeneration projects
Salford: Big changes are happening in Greater Manchester this week. There’s a major regeneration plan and a housing development that’s stirring up some debate.
In Salford, they’re planning a £2.5 billion project around Chapel Street. This will focus on energy-efficient and affordable homes. The first phase could see 42 new homes built on the Farmer Norton car park.
Meanwhile, in Hazel Grove, a controversial plan for 200 homes on green belt land is back. Stockport Council had previously rejected this plan due to local concerns.
Last year, an outline application was approved. Now, the next step is moving forward, bringing the project closer to reality.
Bury
A popular craft beer bar, Keg, Cask & Bottle, is moving. They’ve been in the Longfield Centre since 2019 but need to relocate due to demolition plans.
They’ll move to a nearby building on Bury New Road, which used to be a financial services office. Keg, Cask & Bottle is known for its specialty beers and drinks.
Also, BT plans to install nine ‘street hubs’ in Bury. These hubs will offer free Wi-Fi and phone calls, plus two large advertising screens.
BT has applied for permission to set these up in several locations, including the town center and Prestwich.
Manchester
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is planning new skyscraper halls. This could house thousands more students.
They want to replace two low-rise halls with taller buildings. The new plan includes 2,330 student rooms, a big increase from the current 770.
The first phase is expected to finish by September 2029, featuring a 24-storey tower and two 11-storey buildings.
Rochdale
The Village Hotel in Waterfold Business Park is expanding. They plan to add a 34-bedroom extension to meet rising demand.
This hotel already has 128 rooms, conference spaces, a gym, and a Starbucks. The new extension will add more comfort for guests.
Salford
In Salford, the £2.5 billion regeneration plan is moving ahead. New homes are being proposed for the Farmer Norton car park site.
Phase one could see 42 three-bedroom houses built. If approved, construction could start as early as summer 2025.
Stockport
In Stockport, plans for 200 homes on Mirrlees Fields are progressing. This follows a lengthy legal battle and initial rejection by the council.
Details of the new planning application have been shared. The council had previously expressed concerns about losing valuable green space.
