Exciting plans for a new apartment block in Stockport could reshape the town’s skyline and provide much-needed housing options
Stockport: There’s some buzz about a new apartment block that could really change things up in the town. Plans are in the works for a 20-storey building that aims to bring more homes to the area.
The project is set to cost around £70 million and involves tearing down the old Victoria House office building. They want to replace it with a mix of eight to 20-storey buildings, offering a total of 245 apartments. How cool is that? Plus, they’re thinking about adding rooftop gardens and community spaces on the ground floor.
If everything goes smoothly, construction could kick off in Summer 2025, with the goal of wrapping up by June 2027. The apartments will come in one, two, and three-bedroom options, making it a great choice for different kinds of families.
Progressive Living is behind this project, and they’re really excited about it. They’ve been eyeing this spot for six years, believing Stockport has a lot of potential to be a lively place to live and invest in.
David Fairclough from Progressive Living mentioned how they’ve worked closely with the council to make this vision a reality. They want to play a big part in Stockport’s growth and success.
They’re also making sure some of the homes are wheelchair accessible, aiming for a high-quality living space that’s inclusive for everyone. Shannon Conway from Picture This emphasized how important it was to design homes that meet the community’s needs.
They’re focusing on sustainability too, using Passivhaus principles to ensure the apartments are energy-efficient and blend well with the neighborhood.
To help fund this project, they secured some brownfield grant money from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which is a big win.
Councilor Colin MacAlister is thrilled about this development. He sees it as a fantastic opportunity to turn an underused car park into quality homes right in the town center.
He believes that over the next decade, Stockport will set new standards for town living, with modern homes and better transport links, making it a more attractive place to live.
