Residents in Chislehurst are divided over a proposed underground helicopter lift
The planning documents say the lift is needed for easy access to a private helicopter. Currently, helicopters must stay on-site or be moved off due to weather and security concerns. This has led to a mix of opinions among residents.
Some neighbors are against the idea, citing noise and privacy issues. They worry about the helicopter’s impact on their quiet neighborhood, especially with Biggin Hill airport nearby. Others think the plans are “cool” and compare the owner to Batman.
One objector expressed outrage, saying a helicopter doesn’t belong in a residential area. Another resident recalled the noise from a previous helicopter, which disturbed their family. They emphasized that a built-up area isn’t suitable for regular helicopter use.
The proposed lift would be eight meters underground, with a grass-covered lid. Developers claim it will preserve the Green Belt and respect the local conservation area. However, local residents are still voicing their concerns.
Sue McNamara, a nearby resident, worries about pollution and the environmental impact. She believes owning a helicopter is wrong and disruptive. Another resident, unsure about the plans, fears constant helicopter activity could be a nuisance.
Lawrence Kemp, who lives next door, has a different view. He remembers the previous owners’ helicopter fondly and thinks the lift is a great idea. He believes it won’t be a problem since it will be underground.
Some residents support the project, calling it a unique addition to the area. A local builder even described the helicopter as a “cool Thunderbirds-style contraption.”
As opinions clash, Bromley Council will decide on the proposal soon. The community remains divided, with strong feelings on both sides.
