In November, nearly 7,000 drivers were caught speeding in 20mph zones across South Wales, raising concerns about road safety.
Cardiff: So, it turns out that nearly 7,000 drivers got caught speeding in 20mph zones in South Wales last month. Can you believe that? The data just came out, and it’s a bit shocking.
Last September, Wales decided to drop the speed limit on residential roads from 30mph to 20mph. They thought it would help cut down on accidents and save lives. But not everyone was on board with this change.
In fact, over 460,000 people signed a petition against the new limit. That’s a lot of folks unhappy with the rules! The Welsh Government even said they’d let local councils decide if they wanted to bring back the 30mph limit in some areas.
Now, they’re gathering feedback from communities to see what people think. It’s all about finding a balance between safety and convenience, I guess.
GoSafe, which is a partnership involving the Welsh Government and emergency services, releases monthly data on speeding offenses. In November, they reported that 6,933 drivers were caught speeding in those 20mph zones.
The average speed of those caught was 28.2mph, but some were going as fast as 70mph! That’s just wild. They’ve set up mobile and fixed speed cameras in various spots to keep an eye on things.
They’re focusing on areas where there have been safety concerns, like near schools or places where pedestrians are common. If you want to know more about where the speed cameras are, you can check out the GoSafe website.
