Preston: The old Wilko store at Deepdale Shopping Park is gearing up for a reopening, but what’s going in there is still a bit of a puzzle. The store closed its doors in October 2023 after the chain went under, and now there’s an application in with the city council for some external changes.

This spot, nestled between Go Outdoors and Card Factory, has been empty for a while. But now, it looks like someone might be moving in soon. The application hints at bringing the building back to life, which could mean new jobs and a boost for the local economy.

Interestingly, the application is filed under “Preston Retail Limited,” and they’re keeping the new tenant’s identity a secret. They just mention a “new tenant” without giving any clues. It’s a bit of a cliffhanger, isn’t it?

Chris Dawson, who owns The Range, bought the Wilko brand and plans to reopen around 300 stores over the next five years. But when asked if the Deepdale site is on the list, there was no clear answer.

Meanwhile, B&M Bargains and Poundland have picked up a bunch of Wilko stores, rebranding and reopening them. It’s a busy time in retail, that’s for sure.

This isn’t the first time Preston Retail Limited has made a mysterious application for a unit at Deepdale. Just last month, they got the green light for changes to the old Game store, but still no word on who’s moving in.

They also had plans for the old Outfit branch, but again, no details on the new business. The agent handling these applications hasn’t responded to inquiries, leaving everyone guessing.

The proposed changes for the Wilko site include new windows and some work on the mezzanine floor, which doesn’t need council approval but was included for thoroughness.

So, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what’s really happening at the former Wilko store. Stay tuned!
