Michael Newberry, a former Newcastle United academy player, tragically passed away on his 27th birthday, leaving a profound impact on his family and friends
Newcastle: A heartfelt tribute has been shared for Michael Newberry, a former academy player who sadly passed away on his 27th birthday. His brother, Adrian Salem, expressed his deep sorrow, saying, “My world has shattered.”
Michael played a Boxing Day match for Cliftonville before his sudden death in Newcastle on December 30. His former clubs, including Newcastle United and teams in Northern Ireland, have offered their condolences.
He joined Newcastle’s academy from Red House Farm JFC in Gosforth and even won the Wor Jackie Trophy in 2016, showing he had great potential. Although he didn’t play for the senior team, he went on to play in Iceland and Northern Ireland.
Adrian shared how close they were, saying, “I’m eight years older, so he always looked up to me.” They trained together, with Adrian helping Michael with football while Michael supported him in boxing.
Adrian reminisced about the joy of seeing Michael grow, especially when he represented Northern Ireland under-19s. “I couldn’t be a prouder big brother,” he said.
Adrian described the moment he learned of Michael’s passing, saying, “I just bought a house in Cramlington, and when I got the call, everything turned upside down.” He expressed how much it hurts and how he wishes he could see his brother again.
It’s been touching to see how loved Michael was, with support pouring in on a GoFundMe page set up for his family. They’ve already raised over £8,000 to help with funeral costs, showing just how popular he was in the football community.
