Manchester: The National Lottery’s Big Night of Musicals was back for its third year. It took place at the AO Arena and featured many musical theatre stars. The night was filled with sequins, amazing songs, and even a surprise performance by Daniel Mays from Line of Duty.
Jason Manford hosted the event, bringing his humor to the stage. Performers included casts from Cabaret, Chicago, Mean Girls, and more. The energy was high, especially when the Mary Poppins cast kicked things off with ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’—it was a sight to see!
Next up was Chicago, where the cast wowed the audience with ‘All That Jazz.’ Djalenga Scott shone as Velma Kelly, and the crowd loved every moment. The excitement was palpable with 12,000 fans cheering them on.
A touching moment came from Vicky McClure’s Our Dementia Choir. They sang ‘The Impossible Dream’ with Michael Ball, reminding everyone how music connects us. It was a heartfelt performance that stood out among the big productions.
Local talent also shone through. Young performers from NK and Capa dazzled the crowd with ‘Electricity’ from Billy Elliot. Ruthie Henshall introduced them, and their energy showed that the future of musical theatre is bright.
The show highlighted the arts’ power in communities. A segment from Leeds Playhouse showcased how they make theatre accessible for everyone. It was insightful to see how audio description and Touch Tours work for those with visual impairments.
Manchester got exclusive performances too! Marisha Wallace, set to star in Cabaret, sang ‘Maybe This Time’ and left everyone in awe. She truly owned the stage and proved her talent.
Disney’s Hercules also made an appearance. Luke Brady sang ‘Go The Distance,’ followed by the Muses performing ‘Zero to Hero.’ The energy was infectious, and the crowd loved it.
Closer to home, the cast of Calamity Jane performed a medley of classic songs. Led by Carrie Hope Fletcher, they transported the audience back to the 1870s with their beautiful music.
To close the show, the cast of Bat Out Of Hell performed a medley of ‘Anything for Love/Dead Ringer For Love.’ Their punk-rock costumes and electrifying performance left the crowd buzzing. Confetti cannons marked the end of a fantastic night celebrating musical theatre.
