Authorities shut down several properties in Melton linked to drug dealing, marking a significant operation against county lines crime.
Melton: Multiple properties linked to drug dealing were shut down recently. This was part of a big operation by local police and the council. Officials say it’s the most closures they’ve ever had in one day.
The operation involved Melton Borough Council and Leicestershire Police. They got closure orders from Leicester Magistrates Court on January 29. Five properties in central Melton were affected.
Three of the properties are now off-limits for three months. This can be extended for another three months if needed. A fourth property has a partial closure order, allowing only residents to enter.
A fifth property had a temporary closure extended by the court. Officials noted this was a record number of closures in a single day. Anyone breaking these orders could face arrest and possible jail time.
County lines drug dealing is when dealers from big cities sell drugs in smaller towns. They often use vulnerable people to help with the drug trade. This can involve coercing them into letting their homes be used for dealing, a practice known as “cuckooing.”
Councillor Sarah Cox, chairwoman of the Safer Communities Partnership, praised the closures. She emphasized that county lines issues affect smaller towns like Melton, not just big cities.
She mentioned that these crimes can harm community safety and exploit vulnerable individuals. The council is committed to taking action against these gangs and supporting affected residents.
Inspector Darren Richardson from the local police noted they’ve received many reports about drug activity. He thanked the community for their help in gathering information to take action.
