Cork: A new campaign is kicking off to tackle drink and drug driving, along with issues like untaxed vehicles and those with bald tyres. It’s already showing some results on the busy Cork-Kerry route.

Yesterday, Gardai teamed up with the Road Safety Authority and the Health & Safety Authority for a checkpoint on the N22. If you’re thinking about taking risks on the road, you might want to reconsider. More checkpoints are on the way.

They’re using tech like Automatic Number Plate Recognition to check drivers and vehicles for things like licenses, insurance, and tax. The focus is on catching dangerous vehicles, especially since rising costs might tempt some businesses to skip on maintenance.

At the checkpoint, the Kerry Gardai’s Roads Policing Team found several issues. They made two arrests for suspected drug driving involving cannabis and cocaine, and two vehicles were detained for lacking insurance.

Besides the arrests, there were also warnings for defective vehicles, and drivers who haven’t paid their road tax faced on-the-spot fines. Expect more of these multi-agency checkpoints as Gardai in Munster aim to start the year with stricter road enforcement.
