Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, supports postal workers as they gear up for the busy holiday season, ensuring smooth deliveries for everyone.
Newport: Postal workers are really feeling the holiday spirit as they show their local MP, Jessica Morden, what it’s like to handle the Christmas rush. They’re dealing with a huge increase in letters and parcels this time of year.
Jessica popped by the Newport East Delivery Office to see how the team manages the workload, which can double during the festive season. She chatted with Thomas Elwick, the lead customer operations manager, about Royal Mail’s plans to make things easier for everyone.
They’ve introduced options like Parcel Collect, where posties pick up parcels right from customers’ doorsteps. It’s all about convenience, especially when things get hectic.
To tackle the extra demand, Royal Mail has brought in 16,000 temporary workers across the UK. That’s on top of the 85,000 regular posties who are already on the job. They’re also adding nearly 4,000 new vehicles to their fleet just in time for Christmas.
At the Newport East office, they’ve hired ten more staff and added six vehicles to keep up with the increased delivery needs. Thomas expressed how great it was to have Jessica visit and see their preparations firsthand.
Jessica shared her appreciation for the posties, saying that Royal Mail is a vital part of Christmas in the UK. She really understands the hard work they put in to make the season special for everyone.
