Cornwall: Motorists are really puzzled right now. Temporary speed limit signs near the A38 roadworks have left many scratching their heads.

The confusion kicked off when National Highways started a big £25 million project to refurbish the Saltash Tunnel. They closed the eastbound lane on weeknights, which is a bit of a hassle for drivers.

To keep everyone safe, they dropped the speed limit from 50mph to 30mph. But here’s the kicker: drivers saw signs for 30mph, 40mph, and 50mph all in the same spot. Talk about mixed messages!

Naturally, folks were worried about getting caught by speed cameras. But National Highways has cleared things up. The official speed limit is now 30mph, and they won’t be handing out fines for the initial confusion.

Julian Mitchell, the tunnel manager, explained that the 30mph limit helps keep both lanes open during the day while they work on the sides of the road. He acknowledged the earlier signs were a bit of a mess but assured everyone that the speed limit is now clearly marked. So, if you’re driving through, just stick to 30mph and you should be good to go!
