Newport: So, there’s this mom, Cheryl Porter, who’s really upset because her son Rhys got slapped with a £400 fine for something she thinks is totally unfair. Apparently, it all started after a bonfire night in their neighborhood.

Cheryl says that on December 5, the council accused Rhys of fly tipping, which she thinks is just ridiculous. They’ve been having these bonfires for nearly fifty years without any issues, and now suddenly, they’re in trouble?

She mentioned that they always make sure to keep things safe and controlled during the bonfire. Rhys even had to fill out some paperwork for the council, but they haven’t heard back from them at all. It’s like they’re just ignoring them!

Cheryl was also baffled when the first letter about the fine had their address but was addressed to someone completely different. She tried reaching out to the council for clarification but got no response, just another letter with Rhys’ name on it.

She insists that they always work with the council and local services to keep the bonfire safe. They even wrap up the cardboard for the fire in a black bag, but a council worker tore it open and found Rhys’ name and address.

Even though Rhys has paid the fine, Cheryl still thinks it’s way too much for just some cardboard. She’s frustrated because they’ve always been responsible about their bonfire.

A spokesperson from Newport Council said they take fly tipping seriously and that the fine is standard for such offenses in Wales. But for Cheryl, it just feels like they’re being unfairly targeted.
