A new report reveals mining firms are not informing locals about rare earth mineral exploration in Scotland, raising concerns over transparency.
Ellon: So, there’s this report that says mining companies in Scotland are really not keeping locals in the loop about their plans to dig for rare earth minerals. It’s a bit concerning, right?
Friends of the Earth Scotland pointed out that these companies are exploring areas for metals like lithium and cobalt, which are super important for renewable tech. But the locals? They’re mostly left in the dark.
In places like Aberdeenshire and Dumfries and Galloway, residents are worried about what this could mean for the environment. For instance, in Arthrath, a local company called Aberdeen Minerals is doing surveys for nickel and copper, but folks there feel completely uninformed.
One resident from Ellon said it’s frustrating that the council and government aren’t stepping up to keep people informed. It’s like they have a responsibility, but it’s not happening.
Then there’s Blackcraig, where another mining firm is exploring for all sorts of metals, even in a conservation area. Residents were shocked to see drilling rigs pop up without any warning. It’s a real shocker when you suddenly have heavy machinery outside your window.
People are feeling let down, wondering why they weren’t consulted about such big changes in their community. It’s a serious oversight, and they want answers.
In the Highlands, another company is looking for precious metals, and again, locals are saying they haven’t heard much from them. It seems like there’s a big gap in communication, and it’s leaving people feeling unsupported.
Tamsin Wake, who led the research, emphasized that while we need to transition to greener energy, it shouldn’t come at the cost of local communities. Mining companies really need to be upfront and get the go-ahead from residents before moving forward.
In response, Aberdeen Minerals said they’re committed to engaging with communities, but locals are still skeptical. The Scottish Government is also looking into the report, but it feels like there’s a long way to go.
