Broadband issues in Tiverton and Minehead have locals frustrated and seeking solutions
Tiverton: Broadband speeds are painfully slow. Locals are fed up and want change. Rachel Gilmour, the local MP, is pushing for action. She met with Chris Bryant, the Minister for Science, Innovation, and Technology, to discuss these issues.
The House of Commons Library reports that 11.2% of lines in Tiverton and Minehead get speeds below 10 Mbps. This is much higher than the national average of 3.6%. People are struggling with their internet connections.
Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) had a deal with Airband UK to improve broadband. However, Airband has scaled back its commitments. Now, many homes in Devon and Somerset are still waiting for faster internet.
Rachel Gilmour has been told that new contracts will roll out by June 2025. This is part of the Government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit program. A new Openreach contract aims to help communities affected by Airband’s cutbacks.
After her meeting, Rachel Gilmour emphasized the urgency of the situation. She wants the government to prioritize these improvements. A new contract is set to start in June, and there are plans for a voucher scheme to help locals.
Rachel is committed to improving broadband in Tiverton and Minehead. Fast internet is essential for modern life and will help the region grow.
