Hull: A memorial plaque for a tragic rail disaster is set to be unveiled. This event marks 98 years since the accident that took 12 lives.

The ceremony will happen on February 14, 2025, at Hull Paragon Station. It will honor those lost in the crash, most of whom were from Withernsea.

Richard M. Jones, a local author and historian, has worked hard for this memorial. He has dedicated his life to remembering forgotten disasters and raising funds for memorials.

Richard got permission to place the plaque in Hull. He also ran a successful fundraising campaign to cover the costs. The plaque will list all the victims and honor the emergency services.

On his Facebook, Richard expressed pride in the upcoming unveiling. He thanked TransPennine Express for their support in making this happen.

The ceremony starts at 9 am, near WH Smiths inside the station. Everyone is welcome to attend and remember this tragic event.

Richard has also written about the disaster in his book, “Britain’s Lost Tragedies Uncovered.” He is now working on a book focused solely on this incident.

The crash occurred on Valentine’s Day in 1927. A train from Withernsea was entering Hull when it collided with another train. The signalmen made a mistake, leading both trains onto the same track.

Though the collision was slow, it caused severe damage. The first carriage of the Withernsea train crumpled, leading to most of the deaths and injuries.

This remains East Yorkshire’s worst rail accident, leaving the community in shock. Richard aims to ensure this tragedy is not forgotten.

He has previously worked on memorials for other rail disasters. This new plaque will be a permanent reminder of the victims and the emergency responders.

The unveiling will be at 9:10 am, the exact time of the collision. Family members of victims and representatives from the community will attend.

Richard hopes this memorial will help keep the memory of the victims alive. His book on the disaster will be published later this year.
