Discover the dedicated volunteers ensuring food reaches families in Cork during tough times
Cork: With the cost of living rising, many families are struggling to put food on the table. Thankfully, there are amazing volunteers stepping up to help. They’re making sure that hundreds of families in Cork get the food they need every week.
Saint Vincent DePaul (SVP) has been a real lifesaver for many, especially after a busy holiday season. Normally, they help around 300 families weekly, but during the lead-up to Christmas, they delivered over 2,500 hampers!
Kate, a volunteer for over ten years, shared how food poverty often goes unnoticed. She explained that just because someone has a car doesn’t mean they can afford groceries. It’s a tough situation that many don’t see.
She told us that each hamper is carefully packed to ensure families get balanced meals. The food is also easy to prepare, which is super helpful for kids who might need to cook for themselves.
Kate emphasized the importance of including everyday items like tea and coffee. These little comforts can make a big difference, especially when someone drops by for a visit.
The warehouse is impressive, with everything organized neatly. The volunteers work together seamlessly to make sure as many families as possible are fed each week.
John, a driver for SVP, shared a touching story about a visit he made. He recalled a time when a little girl was thrilled to see the food arrive. But when she opened the fridge, it was completely empty. That food was all they had for the week.
On the day we visited, 62 hampers were set to go out. SVP doesn’t just provide food; they also help with essentials like shampoo and mouthwash, which can be hard for some families to afford.
Annette, the warehouse manager, showed us some of the special items they included in their Christmas hampers. She mentioned how excited people were to receive self-care products, which can be quite pricey.
The hampers are delivered discreetly in unmarked vans, ensuring families feel respected and supported. If you or someone you know needs help, SVP is just a call away at 021 427 0444. You can also visit their website for more info.
And if you want to help out, consider donating or buying a ticket for their annual car draw. You might even win a new Ford Focus!
