London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, started a “Nightlife Taskforce.” This group aims to help London’s night economy, which has faced some difficulties lately. Cameron Leslie will lead the group; he co-founded the Fabric nightclub. The taskforce has eleven other industry experts.

The taskforce started after Amy Lamé resigned from her position as Night Czar. She left in October 2024 after eight years. Khan had promised this taskforce earlier in his re-election plans.

Some people criticized Amy Lamé’s performance, stating she did not save enough venues. These venues struggled with post-pandemic costs, putting hospitality businesses under much pressure. Concerns also arose about her salary, which grew to £132,846 yearly. Some questioned her authority to make changes, as borough councils control licensing decisions.

Experts warned about venue problems last year at City Hall meetings. Strict licensing laws, crime, and high costs hurt venues. A business leader said tourists had nowhere to go because venues in the West End close early due to councils requiring them to close at 11 pm.

The taskforce will meet over the next six months to discuss nightlife challenges and explore the opportunities there, as announced by City Hall. The group will decide about the Night Czar role. They might find a replacement for Lamé or remove the role altogether.

Khan stated that nightlife is vital to London. He noted current challenges for nighttime industries, such as costs, staffing, and licensing, which are hurting businesses. He wants to help them, and the taskforce will examine these issues. The experts’ knowledge will help develop solutions with the goal of a better London for everyone.

Leslie is excited to lead the taskforce, which he says represents the best of London and covers a broad range of industries. He knows challenges exist and that the taskforce cannot magically fix things. However, he believes they can offer meaningful help if stakeholders work together to help London’s nightlife thrive.

The taskforce includes different experts. Sophie Brownlee is with the Music Venue Trust, Seb Glover co-founded Fold nightclub, Alice Hoffman-Fuller consulted for Corsica Studios, Michael Kill leads the Night Time Industries Association, Lily London is a DJ and radio host, and Kate Nicholls heads UKHospitality.

Nadine Noor founded Pxssy Palace, Provhat Rahman created the Daytimers Collective, Sam Spencer works at Broadwick Live, Georgina Wald is at Fuller, Smith & Turner, and Nathaneal Williams founded the Colour Factory.

The taskforce also has an advisory group that includes police and transport representatives. London Councils, trade unions, and the business community may participate as well. Vibe Lab will support them with research. They will ask Londoners for input, and this data will guide their advice.
