Cork: GE HealthCare is making a big move. They’re investing €138 million in a new manufacturing facility at their Cork plant. This is great news for the area and shows confidence in the local workforce.

The new facility will help produce more contrast media. These are important for medical imaging, like MRIs. There’s a growing demand for these products worldwide, and Cork will play a key role in meeting that need.

By 2027, the new plant will provide 25 million more doses of contrast media each year. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will kick off construction today. This expansion is a big step for GE HealthCare in Ireland.

Contrast media helps doctors see organs and tissues better during scans. The demand for these products is expected to double in the next ten years. This is due to an aging population and more chronic health issues.

The new facility will be 3000m2 and will include advanced systems for production. This will help GE HealthCare meet global demand while ensuring a reliable supply of products.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin praised GE HealthCare’s long history in Ireland. He noted their commitment to the local workforce and the importance of this investment for Cork.

Kevin O’Neill, the CEO of GE HealthCare’s Pharmaceutical Diagnostics, emphasized their responsibility to meet global healthcare needs. This new facility shows their commitment to future demand and supply security.

Eugene Barrett, the site leader, highlighted the skilled team in Cork and the strong partnerships they have. The first doses from the new facility are expected by the end of 2027.

IDA Ireland’s CEO, Michael Lohan, welcomed the expansion. He noted it reflects confidence in the Carrigtohill team and the local capabilities developed over the years.

GE HealthCare follows strict manufacturing practices. They have over 4000 employees globally and support various medical fields. The engineering firm IPS-Integrated Project Services will lead the project, creating over 250 construction jobs starting in February 2025.
