A house in Marton faces costly changes after Middlesbrough Council denied its planning permission request for completed work
Marton: A house in Marton has hit a snag with the council. Middlesbrough Council just refused the planning permission for work that’s already done. Talk about a headache!
So, here’s the deal. The council slapped a “refuse and enforce” notice on the property. This means the owners might have to spend a fortune to undo the work. Ouch! They’ll need to revert the house back to its original state unless they can successfully appeal.
Now, it’s a bit murky when the work was actually done. But Google Maps shows that by July 2023, the changes were already in place. The garage got turned into a single-storey extension, and there’s a two-storey build at the back. Plus, they put up a fence where there used to be some green space.
Some parts of the project did get the green light back in 2022, like the side extension. But it seems they didn’t stick to the approved plans for everything else. A neighbor even raised a fuss during the consultation, pointing out that the work was done without permission. He wasn’t too happy about a window looking straight into his lounge either!
The council’s report said the single-storey extension was fine, but the two-storey one? Not so much. They called it bulky and too dominant for the area. They also didn’t like the loss of green space, which they said hurt the neighborhood’s vibe.
In the end, the council decided to refuse the two-storey extension and the changes to the boundary. The owners can appeal this decision, but they’ve got to do it within 12 weeks from the notice date, which is December 30.
The agent for the application didn’t say if they plan to accept the decision or fight back. It’s a bit of a waiting game now!
