Curious about safety in your area? A new map shows the number of sex offenders nearby, helping you stay informed and vigilant.
England: There’s a growing concern about the number of registered sex offenders. The latest stats show that there are now over 70,000 of them in England and Wales, which is a significant jump from previous years.
To put it in perspective, that’s about one offender for every 763 people aged 10 and up. Just last year, the number was around 68,000, so we’re seeing a 2.5% increase. It’s the highest it’s ever been.
Looking back, the numbers have nearly doubled in just over a decade. Back in 2010, there were about 37,000 registered offenders. It’s a pretty alarming rise.
The Ministry of Justice tracks these offenders through a system designed to keep tabs on them and prevent further crimes. They have to keep the police updated on their whereabouts and any changes in their situation.
Interestingly, some areas have a much higher concentration of offenders compared to others. For instance, County Durham has the highest rate, with 196 offenders per 100,000 people.
Other regions like Gwent and Teesside also have notable numbers. It’s definitely something to keep in mind if you’re looking at safety in your community.
