A man was charged after kicking an unconscious player during a rugby match in Wirral, raising concerns about sportsmanship and safety.
Wallasey: So, there was this wild scene at a rugby match where a guy named Stephen Childs just ran onto the field and kicked another player in the head while he was out cold. Can you believe that?
It all went down on November 19, 2023, at Oldershaw Rugby Club. The poor guy, Stephen Connor, got tackled hard and ended up knocked out. That’s when Childs decided to jump in and deliver that kick.
Childs, who’s from Grange Moor in Runcorn, pleaded guilty to common assault. He showed up at Wirral Magistrates Court, and his lawyer tried to argue that he was just defending someone else. But honestly, kicking a guy who’s already down? That’s a whole different level.
The prosecutor pointed out that Connor didn’t even want to press charges against the guy who tackled him. He knew that’s just part of the game. But Childs kicking him while he was unconscious? That’s just plain wrong.
Childs has a bit of a record, but his lawyer said he’s turned his life around thanks to his wife and their son. Still, the magistrates are taking this seriously and have sent the case to Liverpool Magistrates Court for sentencing on February 5. It’s a real mess.
