Barry: There’s some buzz around town about the plans to spruce up a part of Barry that’s been called an eyesore. The Broad Street Clinic is set to be transformed, and the council is gearing up to present this to the planning committee soon.

Back in May 2024, the local council announced they’d hired contractors to whip up a masterplan. The idea is to knock down the old clinic and replace it with affordable homes. Plus, they’re also looking to redevelop the Gladstone Road Bridge Compound site into apartments.

These changes are just a few of the big projects we can look forward to in the new year. If you want to stay in the loop, signing up for the newsletter is a good idea.

Now, about the Broad Street Clinic—Cllr Lis Burnett mentioned that while some folks think it’s derelict, it’s still a functioning clinic. But many residents see it as an eyesore, and the council is working with the health board to build a new clinic.

The masterplan for Broad Street has three phases. First up, they’ll redevelop the old Compound site into 46 apartments for older folks and a new healthcare facility. Then, they’ll demolish the clinic and put up a new apartment block with 34 affordable homes, plus some commercial space on the ground floor.

Finally, they’ll make improvements to the road and public areas around the development. Cllr Burnett expects this to hit the planning stage by late 2024 or early 2025.

Moving on to Upper Cosmeston Farm, the Welsh Government has decided not to intervene in plans for 567 new homes there. The Vale of Glamorgan Council has already given the green light, and they’re keen to partner up for the project.

There was some back and forth about whether the plans would be called in for review, but it looks like that’s off the table now. Some locals are worried about the impact on green spaces, while others argue there’s a real need for more housing, especially with half of the new homes being affordable.

As for Barry Waterfront, it seems like things are back on track after the UK Government confirmed funding for the redevelopment. The council had a bit of a setback earlier this year when they didn’t get the levelling up funding, but they’ve now secured £19.9 million to revamp an area known as the Mole.

This project will bring a new watersports center, a marina, and a park to the waterfront. Plus, the historic Dock Office will be transformed into a commercial space for businesses. It’s a collaborative effort with several partners, including Associated British Ports and Cardiff and Vale College.
