Galway: Big changes are coming for social welfare payments. With the February Bank Holiday, many payments will be affected. Parents, especially, need to pay attention.

Because of St Brigid’s Day on February 3rd, banks and post offices will be closed. This means some payments will arrive earlier than expected.

For instance, Child Benefit payments, usually due on February 4th, will be sent out this week instead. So, mark your calendars for January 31st or February 1st.

Also, if you’re expecting the New Baby Grant, it will be impacted too. This new grant started this month and is paid monthly to eligible parents.

Parents will get €280 for the New Baby Grant, along with the first Child Benefit payment of €140. That’s a total of €420 for new parents!

New parents will receive a form to register for Child Benefit after their baby’s birth. If you already have kids, your new baby will be added automatically.

Don’t forget about the St Brigid’s Day bank holiday. It’s easy to overlook, but it could change your payment schedule.

Here are the upcoming Child Benefit payment dates for the year:

  • March 4th
  • April 1st
  • May 6th (may be early due to May Bank Holiday)
  • June 3rd (may be early due to June Bank Holiday)
  • July 1st
  • August 5th (may be early due to August Bank Holiday)
  • September 2nd
  • October 7th
  • November 4th
  • December 9th
