Cornwall drivers should prepare for significant roadworks and closures as the new year kicks off with multiple ongoing projects
Cornwall: The new year is here, and so are some major roadworks that drivers need to keep in mind. After a little break over Christmas, five big projects have kicked off in 2025 and will be around for a few months.
Wales & West Utilities is busy with gas works in several towns, which means some roads will be closed and traffic controls are in place. Expect delays, as some of these works could last four to five months.
While it might be a hassle, the utility company assures us that these works are crucial for keeping gas flowing safely to homes and businesses. They want to make sure everyone stays warm and safe for years to come.
There are also other projects starting up, like the Mid Cornwall Metro work in Newquay and upgrades to the Saltash Tunnel. So, here’s a quick rundown of the major roadwork schemes happening in Cornwall this year.
In Newquay, Gover Lane will be closed from January 2 to March 28 for gas works. Beach Road will see a one-way restriction lifted during the same period. Narrowcliff will have traffic lights as they widen the footway, running from January 6 to the end of March.
Over in Redruth, West End will have rolling multi-way traffic lights from January 2 to April 22 for gas pipe upgrades. Church Lane will close for footpath work from January 27 to February 28, and Blowinghouse will have rolling traffic lights from April 7 to May 21.
In Truro, Kenwyn Street will see multiple closures for gas works throughout January and February. Little Castle Street will also be closed for gas work from February 3 to March 3, and Victoria Square will have closures from March 3 to April 7.
Penryn isn’t left out either, with West End and West Street both facing closures for gas works in January and February. Lastly, the Saltash Tunnel will have the eastbound lane closed on weeknights from January 13 to February 25 for refurbishment.
So, if you’re driving around Cornwall, keep an eye out for these changes and plan your routes accordingly!
