A heating failure at St Benedict Catholic Academy leads to partial school closures this week, affecting several year groups.
Derby: St Benedict Catholic Academy is facing a heating issue. This week, many students will learn from home. The heating broke down in a main teaching building. Problems started last week with the heating and electric in the north block.
Head teacher Hazel Boyce informed parents last Thursday. She announced that years eight, ten, and twelve would be closed last Friday and today. With one block out of service, there isn’t enough room for all students in the south block.
Today, she updated parents about the ongoing heating problem. Surveys show it’s tough to fix. The Trust is working with contractors for a solution. They hope to start repairs later this week.
The school will be partially closed for five days. Here’s the schedule: Tuesday is for Year 10 and Year 9, Wednesday for Year 9 and Year 11 (with Year 11 drama students attending), Thursday for Year 11 and Year 7, Friday for Year 7 and Year 13, and Monday for Year 7 and Year 8.
Students with an EHCP or those considered vulnerable can still attend. Mrs. Boyce emphasized that student safety is a top priority. Due to limited space, only certain groups can come in.
Students not affected must attend as usual. Their lessons will take place in the south block. School buses will run normally. Parents of students receiving free meals should check their emails for voucher codes.
Mrs. Boyce understands the frustration and apologizes for the inconvenience. She promises to keep everyone updated. Online work will be assigned for students not in school.
A couple of years ago, the school was chosen for a government rebuilding program. However, they are still waiting for updates on that project.
