Manchester: One of the oldest pubs in Greater Manchester is about to see some big changes. The current licensee is passing the reins back to Star Pubs, which is part of Heineken, this week.

Starting January 8, Star Pubs will take over the Britons Protection from the current licensee. The pub will close for a bit until January 16 for some upgrades.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs mentioned that this short closure will help them make some necessary improvements. They plan to install Wi-Fi, update the tills, and renovate the upholstery, flooring, and toilets. Plus, they’ll redecorate the function and meeting rooms and work on making the building more energy-efficient.

They assured everyone that these upgrades will keep the pub’s historic charm intact. The Britons Protection has a rich history, having served as a refuge during the Peterloo Massacre and even as a recruitment center during the Napoleonic Wars.

Last year, the pub’s licensees, Mark West and Allan Hudd, were in a legal tussle over its future after Star Pubs decided not to renew their lease. This sparked worries that the beloved pub might lose its unique character and become just another generic spot.

In a petition signed by over 16,000 people, the Britons team expressed fears that losing control would turn the pub into a bland gastro pub, stripping it of its charm and local offerings.

A court hearing took place in June 2024 but was postponed due to a procedural issue. At that time, Mr. Hudd called it a small victory.

In September, a positive resolution was reached between Star Pubs and the licensees, ensuring the pub’s future. They didn’t go into details about daily operations but mentioned a smooth transition.

Both parties are committed to keeping the Britons Protection alive and well, focusing on its historic status and a great selection of real ales. Mr. Hudd expressed relief that the pub would continue as it is.

However, just a few months later, Star Pubs confirmed the pub’s temporary closure and the full transfer of ownership to them starting January 8.

Star Pubs & Bars is the pub division of Heineken UK, which operates around 2,400 pubs across the UK.

Mark West and Allan Hudd were reached for comments but have not yet responded.
