Concerns arise over Luton vans used for recycling in Gwent, raising safety issues for workers and questioning council practices
Abertillery: There’s been some chatter about the Luton vans being used for recycling in Blaenau Gwent. Folks are worried these vans just aren’t up to the job.
Apparently, the council has been sending out these small Luton vans to collect recycling, and some residents are not happy about it. One person even said it’s “completely unfit for the purpose.”
This resident watched the council workers and felt it was clear no one had really checked the van properly. They’re concerned that the workers could get hurt if this keeps happening.
Others in the area have chimed in, pointing out that the council has proper recycling lorries that are made for this kind of work. So, they’re asking, where are those vehicles?
The same resident questioned why their council tax isn’t being used to run the right vehicles. It seems like a no-brainer to them that using the wrong vans could put workers at risk.
Now, Luton vans are usually meant for moving stuff, not for collecting recycling. They’re great for moving houses because they can hold a lot, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe for this job.
The council responded, saying it’s standard practice to use these vans and that they do risk assessments to keep their staff safe. They claim the vans have safety features like non-slip flooring.
They also mentioned that if anyone wants to talk more about it, the council is open to discussions. So, it looks like this issue might not be going away anytime soon.
