Surrey: So, Lucy Letby is spending her first birthday behind bars, and it’s not going to be a fun one. She won’t get any presents or cake, and even her birthday cards will be sniffed by drug dogs. Can you believe that?

This birthday is a far cry from what she used to have before her arrest for the terrible things she did as a nurse. She was found guilty of murdering seven babies and trying to kill seven more. Now, she’s got a life sentence hanging over her.

She turns 35 on January 4, but it’ll just be another day in prison for her. No celebrations, just the same routine as always at HMP Bronzefield. A retired prison governor, Vanessa Frake, said she’ll have to keep her guard up because of her high-profile status.

Vanessa mentioned that Letby won’t be allowed any birthday treats. It’s just another day in jail, and she’ll have to watch her back. If she gets any cards, they’ll be checked for drugs, so it’s not exactly a festive atmosphere.

At HMP Bronzefield, there are around 572 women, and they have a pretty strict schedule. They get unlocked at 8 am, have lessons or work, and then it’s back to their cells for the night. Letby will be in a vulnerable unit, but that doesn’t mean she’s safe from other inmates.

Being a child murderer, she’s definitely a target. Vanessa pointed out that she’ll always have to be cautious. And as for her mental health, they’ll assess her risk of self-harm, which is a whole other concern.

Over the holidays, Letby won’t be getting any gifts from her parents either. There are no visits allowed on Christmas and other holidays, so it’s a pretty lonely time for her. If she did see them, it wouldn’t be in private, which must be tough.
