Residents in Barnsley express frustration over uncollected waste since Christmas, raising concerns about hygiene and council tax increases.
Barnsley: Residents are upset about waste piling up since Christmas. The local council hasn’t collected bins for weeks, and it’s causing a mess.
In Silkstone, people still wait for their brown recycling bins to be emptied. The last collection was on December 23. Locals are frustrated and worried about hygiene.
The council said grey bin collections are back on track. They added extra resources to fix the backlog caused by cold weather in January.
A council spokesperson mentioned they are focusing on recycling collections next week. They asked residents to leave out missed bins for collection.
Some residents, like Diane Batty, are particularly concerned. Her 91-year-old mother’s bin hasn’t been emptied in six weeks. Diane feels the service is unacceptable.
Others worry about attracting pests to their overflowing bins, which still have leftover Christmas food. The situation is becoming a health concern.
The council plans to raise council tax by 4.9% next year. This means an extra £87 for those in Band D properties. Residents are unhappy about this increase.
Many locals are demanding compensation for the missed collections. They took to social media to express their anger over the situation.
One resident, Anna Butler, said it’s disgusting that her brown bin hasn’t been emptied in ten weeks. She feels it’s unfair given the council tax she pays.
Another resident, Courney Allott, questioned how the council could fall behind on collections. She noted that the snow only lasted a short time.
Some described the situation as ridiculous and disgraceful. Councillor James Higginbottom explained that the snow caused delays in collections.
He acknowledged the frustration and apologized for the inconvenience. The council is working to catch up on the missed collections.
