Lloyds Banking Group plans to close 136 branches, impacting customers in Cambridgeshire and beyond.
Huntingdon: Lloyds Banking Group is closing over 100 branches this year. They will shut 61 Lloyds, 61 Halifax, and 14 Bank of Scotland branches. The closures will happen between May 2025 and March 2026.
This decision follows a recent announcement allowing customers to use any of their brands for in-person banking. Lloyds says more people are banking online instead of visiting branches.
All employees at the closing branches will be offered jobs within the company. In Cambridgeshire, the Halifax branch on High Street in Huntingdon will close on May 15, 2025.
A Lloyds spokeswoman mentioned that over 20 million customers use their apps for banking. Customers now have more options, including telephone banking and access to over 11,000 Post Office branches.
Since February 2022, 1,784 bank branches have closed or announced closures. This averages about 50 closures each month. At least 289 branches will close this year, with more closures expected next year.
The LINK initiative was created by major banks to help vulnerable customers during this shift to cashless banking. When a community loses its local bank, banking hubs or free ATMs will be set up to help.
