Residents of Lincoln’s Sewell’s Walk are calling for urgent measures as flooding threatens their homes
Lincoln: Residents on Sewell’s Walk are really worried about flooding. They feel like their homes are on the brink of disaster, and it’s frustrating. This street runs near a waterway that connects the River Witham to Sincil Dike, and it’s been a problem for a while.
One resident, Gill Stanton, has lived there for over 30 years. She mentioned that flooding has become a regular issue since 2019, especially after Storm Babet hit in October 2023. It’s tough for her and her neighbors, who are now using sandbags again to protect their homes.
Gill shared that she got a flood warning recently, and by the next day, the water was rising. She even had to move her car to avoid it getting damaged. Parking is another hassle, as there’s no residents-only parking, and cars keep driving through the flooded street, making things worse.
Despite all this, Gill loves her neighborhood. She enjoys the wildlife and the community, but she feels ignored by the local council. They seem to only care when properties are actually flooded, which is frustrating for her and others.
She even joked with someone from the Environment Agency, asking if they needed to let the street flood before anyone would take action. Even though the water levels have gone down, the paths are still icy, making it unsafe to go out.
Local MP Hamish Falconer and Councillor Debbie Armiger visited the area to talk to residents about the flooding. Armiger, who helped distribute sandbags during the last storm, expressed disappointment that the street is flooded again. She pointed out that heavy traffic is damaging the road and causing these issues.
Falconer added that while most of Lincoln is fine, some areas, like Sewell’s Walk, are struggling. He warned residents to be careful due to the icy conditions and promised to follow up on the infrastructure problems. It’s clear that something needs to be done before it gets worse.
