Jenny Randerson, a prominent Liberal Democrat figure, has died, leaving a significant legacy in Welsh politics and public service.
Cardiff: It’s a sad day for Welsh politics. Jenny Randerson, the former Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, has passed away at the age of 76. Her party shared the news, highlighting how she made a lasting impact on politics and society.
Jenny was a trailblazer. She played a key role in building the Wales Millennium Centre and made national museums in Wales free to enter. She was also the first female Liberal Democrat minister in the UK, serving as Minister for Culture, Sport, and the Welsh Language from 2000 to 2003.
After her time in the Assembly, she became Baroness Randerson of Roath Park. In the House of Lords, she was the parliamentary under-secretary of state for Wales, making history as the first female Welsh Liberal Democrat to hold a ministerial role at Westminster.
Since 2019, she had been the chancellor of Cardiff University and was involved with several charities, including the Wales Council for Deaf People. She leaves behind her husband, Peter, two children, and three grandchildren.
Jenny’s journey began with a history degree and a PGCE, leading her to a career in education. She was also a Cardiff councillor and a magistrate, showing her commitment to public service throughout her life.
Jane Dodds, the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, expressed her sorrow, saying Jenny dedicated her life to serving the people of Cardiff and Wales. Her contributions will be missed by many.
