Leicestershire: Renters in Leicestershire are feeling the pinch as their rent bills climb. Many are now paying hundreds more each year compared to 2023.

In Harborough, the average rent hit £931 a month, which is a whopping 13.5% increase. That’s the highest jump in the county!

This means folks in Harborough are shelling out an extra £111 monthly. Ouch! It’s tough out there for renters.

Hinckley and Bosworth aren’t far behind, with rents rising to £875 a month, an 11.7% increase. That’s about £92 more each month.

Leicester also saw a significant rise of 11.4%, adding £99 to monthly bills. Other areas like Melton and Oadby and Wigston are feeling the heat too.

Overall, private rents in England are averaging £1,369 a month, up 9.2% from last year. That’s an extra £115 for many households.

In response, the government is pushing the Renters’ Rights Bill to help stabilize the situation. It aims to end no-fault evictions, which is a step in the right direction.

Polly Neate from Shelter emphasizes that the bill needs to do more to prevent these steep rent hikes. Many renters are being forced out of their homes due to unaffordable increases.

She highlights that over 300,000 renters had to move last year because they couldn’t keep up with rising costs. The bill could be a game-changer for millions of renters in England.

It’s about time tenants get some security and fair treatment. The government needs to ensure that rent increases align with inflation or wage growth to truly protect renters.

Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops!
