Leicester: Last year, Leicester City Council recorded over 7,300 flytipping incidents. But the numbers vary wildly across different areas of the city.

Westcotes topped the list with a staggering 1,209 incidents, making it the dirtiest ward. It’s been the worst for three years running. In contrast, Thurncourt had just seven flytips, showing a huge difference.

The council pointed out that densely populated areas often face more flytipping issues. A spokesperson mentioned that these neighborhoods have more short-term rentals, which can lead to confusion about proper waste disposal.

One resident from Westcotes shared her frustration, saying she’s seen everything from furniture to dirty nappies dumped in the streets. She believes landlords are often to blame for the mess.

Stoneygate and Fosse also had high numbers, with 892 and 876 incidents, respectively. However, Stoneygate is seeing some improvement, with numbers dropping below 1,000 for the first time in years.

On the flip side, Thurncourt and Abbey are shining examples of cleanliness. The council is taking action against flytipping, with fines up to £400 for offenders. Some areas are even raising their fines to combat the issue more effectively.

When comparing Leicester to nearby cities, it’s performing relatively well. For instance, Nottingham had a much higher rate of flytipping incidents. The council is urging residents to help keep the city clean by disposing of waste properly.

They’re also planning to discuss these issues in an upcoming meeting, focusing on how to tackle flytipping more effectively. The message is clear: everyone has a role to play in keeping Leicester tidy.
