A Leicester shop owner speaks out after thieves brazenly steal items from his store, highlighting a growing issue of retail crime.
Leicester: A shop owner is frustrated with thieves stealing from his store. He shared his experience after a recent incident where thieves walked out with stolen goods. They didn’t even try to hide what they were doing.
On the same day, a report from the British Retail Consortium revealed that shoplifting is at an all-time high. In 2023/24, there were over 20 million thefts in the UK, costing retailers £2.2 billion.
In this latest incident, two young women with babies browsed the shop. They seemed to point out expensive soft toys to two young men. Minutes later, the men returned and took two toys worth £200, walking out without a care.
The owner noted that shoplifting is becoming more common. He believes it’s no longer seen as a serious crime. He mentioned that the rise of online sales makes it easier for thieves to sell stolen items quickly.
He gave an example of a toy he sold for £22.99, which was listed online for £50. The online resale market is booming, making it profitable for thieves.
The owner expressed sympathy for the police, who are struggling with resources. The British Retail Consortium reported that incidents of violence and abuse in retail have also increased significantly.
Retail workers face threats and violence daily. The BRC chief executive stated that retail crime is spiraling out of control, with many workers feeling unsafe at their jobs.
New measures to protect retail workers will be introduced later this year. The general secretary of the retail workers union emphasized the need for action to ensure staff can work without fear.
Police are working to improve their response to retail crime. They aim to strengthen relationships with retailers and bring high-harm offenders to justice.
