A new free bus route across the River Thames will launch in April, easing congestion and improving travel for Londoners.
London: A new Superloop bus route is coming to East London! It’s set to launch in just three months, right when the Silvertown Tunnel opens on April 7. The best part? It’s free for the first year!
This route will connect Silvertown and Greenwich, helping to ease the traffic jam at the Blackwall Tunnel. Plus, it’ll make bus travel across the Thames way easier, increasing the number of buses from six to 21 every hour.
The SL4 route will run from Canary Wharf to Grove Park. It’s the last of ten Superloops, following the first one that opened in July 2023. Exciting stuff!
And there’s more good news! Two other bus routes crossing the Thames will also be free for a year. The 129 will now end in Newham, and the 108 will keep running every 10 minutes using the Blackwall Tunnel.
The Silvertown Tunnel has been in the works since 2021 and is expected to cut journey times by up to 20 minutes during busy hours. That’s a real win for commuters!
Cyclists will also get a dedicated shuttle service since they can’t cross the bridge safely. This service will run every 12 minutes, seven days a week, from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm.
There will be two stops for the shuttle, one near Royal Victoria DLR station and the other close to Millennium Way. So, it’s super convenient!
Just a heads up for drivers: there will be charges for using both tunnels between 6 pm and 10 pm. If you’re registered with TfL Auto Pay, you’ll pay a lower off-peak rate of £1.50.
