Great Harwood: A local football club is on a mission to upgrade its facilities. Great Harwood Rovers is planning to add a new 3G pitch. This will not only boost their capacity but also allow more folks to enjoy the facilities, rain or shine.

They’re also looking to partner with other sports clubs, which is pretty cool. This means more sports options for everyone in Great Harwood and nearby areas. The Lancashire Bombers, an American flag football team, are all in for this new pitch. They’re excited about the chance to train and play there, no matter the weather.

If you’re not familiar, American flag football is a non-contact version of the game. Players wear flags, and instead of tackling, you just pull off the flags. It’s fast-paced and super fun, making it a great way for anyone to get involved in the sport.

The Bombers are all about inclusivity. They have teams for all ages and skill levels, and they compete across the country. Recently, some of their players even went to Serbia for an international tournament. Plus, one of their players is training full-time at the NFL Academy in Loughborough.

Since flag football is set to be part of the 2028 Olympics, interest in the sport has skyrocketed. The Bombers have seen a surge in new members, and their young players are doing amazing things. Two under-19 players made it to the full-contact GB squad, and their under-17 team has been on fire, winning all their games.

They even took on the Scottish National Squad and came out on top. At a recent meeting with Sarah Smith MP, Russ Bury, the Bombers’ head coach, expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received and excitement for the new 3G facility.

Sarah Smith shared her enthusiasm too, highlighting how flag football opens doors for everyone, especially women and those with disabilities. It’s all about making sports accessible to all. Nigel Sutton, chairman of Great Harwood Rovers, echoed this sentiment, saying the partnership with the Bombers will enhance inclusivity at their club.

Great Harwood Rovers has been a community staple since 1975, running entirely on local volunteers. They currently have 27 teams for kids of all ages, plus a Mini League for the little ones. With over 350 active participants, they’re truly a hub for grassroots football.
