Kiena Dawes, a young mother, felt trapped and took her own life after enduring abuse, leaving a heartbreaking message behind.
Fleetwood: A young mum named Kiena Dawes tragically took her own life after facing relentless domestic abuse. The court heard she felt completely trapped.
Kiena, just 23, had been through a lot. She suffered both physical and emotional abuse from her partner, Ryan Wellings. The situation escalated after a fight on July 11, 2022, which left her injured.
Ryan, 30, claimed they would often argue and that he sometimes restrained her. He insisted he never abused her and wasn’t responsible for her death. But the prosecution painted a different picture, saying Kiena felt she had no way out.
During the trial, a psychiatrist explained that the ongoing abuse had taken a toll on Kiena. The phrase “the abuse weakened the camel’s back, the assault on July 11 broke it” really hit home.
Just days before her death, Kiena was so overwhelmed with suicidal thoughts that she got into a minor car accident. The argument that led to her injuries started over something as small as moving a piece of sandpaper.
Ryan described a heated moment where he said he “sat Kiena down like a dog” and admitted to calling her hurtful names. He claimed her injuries were either accidental or self-inflicted, which raised eyebrows in court.
After being arrested for assault, Ryan allegedly made threats to Kiena from another phone. She was also pressured to take down a social media post about the abuse. The jury learned that Kiena was vulnerable due to her mental health struggles.
It was heartbreaking to hear that Kiena felt she had no choice but to end her life. She was a young mother battling her demons while being bullied and terrorized by Ryan.
On July 22, Kiena left a chilling note on her phone, stating, “Ryan Wellings killed me.” She described him as a monster. After dropping her daughter off at a friend’s place, she made sure the note would be found before taking her own life.
Ryan Wellings, who denies the charges against him, is facing serious accusations in court. This case is a stark reminder of the devastating effects of domestic abuse.
